Aquinnah Cliffs: A Half-Day Adventure

The Aquinnah cliffs sit at the southwestern tip of Martha’s Vineyard, and they’re easily one of the most striking natural sights on the island. The drive itself is part of the experience — winding country roads, stone walls, and glimpses of the ocean opening up between the trees.

Getting There

From the inn, plan on roughly forty-five minutes by car. Take your time. There are pull-offs along the way that are worth a quick stop for photos, and a couple of farm stands that make for a fun mid-route snack.

The Overlook and Lighthouse

Park near the cliff overlook and walk the short path to the viewing platform. The clay cliffs glow rust, ochre, and gray, and Aquinnah Light stands quietly to the side. If you visit in the late afternoon, the light catches the cliffs at their best.

What to Bring

Comfortable shoes, a windbreaker, sunscreen, and water are all you really need. There’s a small cluster of shops near the overlook for ice cream and lobster rolls when you’re ready to take a break before the drive back.
