Your Weekend Guide to Oak Bluffs and Beyond
Martha’s Vineyard has a way of slowing you down — in the best possible way. And Oak Bluffs, with its colorful gingerbread cottages, lively harbor, and easy-going energy, is the perfect place to let a weekend unfold naturally. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another summer, here’s how to make the most of a long weekend on the island.
Friday Evening: Settle In and Stroll
After checking in at the Island Inn, take a short walk down to the Oak Bluffs harbor. The evening light on the water is something special, and there’s usually live music drifting from one of the restaurants along Circuit Avenue. Grab a scoop at a local ice cream shop, wander past the gingerbread cottages of the Camp Meeting Association, and ease into island time. There’s no schedule here — just the sound of the waves and the feeling that the weekend has officially begun.
Saturday: Beach, Town, and a Long Lunch
Start your morning with coffee on the patio, then head to one of the nearby beaches. Inkwell Beach is a short walk from the Inn and perfect for a relaxed morning swim, while State Beach offers a longer stretch of sand if you’re looking for a quieter spot. After the beach, make your way into town for lunch. Oak Bluffs has a great mix of seafood shacks, farm-to-table spots, and casual lunch counters — many right along the harbor. Spend the afternoon browsing the shops on Circuit Avenue or rent bikes to ride the path along the coast toward Edgartown.
Sunday: Slow Down and Explore Beyond
Use Sunday to venture a little further. Drive up-island to Aquinnah to see the famous clay cliffs and the lighthouse, or spend a quiet morning in Vineyard Haven browsing bookstores and galleries. If you’d rather stay close, grab breakfast from a local bakery and spend the morning by the Island Inn pool before heading to the ferry. The Vineyard has a way of making even a short trip feel restorative — and there’s always a reason to come back.
